Identifying Narrative Perspective Solutions and Explanations
To tackle these exercises, first focus on determining who is telling the story and from what position. Is the narrator directly involved in the action, or are they observing from the outside? Identifying this relationship will help clarify the structure and bias in the narrative.
Next, examine the language used. Pay attention to pronouns and verbs–first-person (“I”), second-person (“you”), or third-person (“he/she/they”)–as these often reveal the viewpoint from which the story is presented. This will guide your understanding of the narrator’s role and influence over the story.
For more complex texts, consider the narrator’s knowledge and emotional distance. Does the narrator know everything about the characters and events (omniscient), or are they limited to one character’s thoughts and feelings? Assessing these details will help ensure accurate identification of the text’s viewpoint.
