How to Identify a Reindeer vs a Caribou

Look closely at the antlers. The shape and structure of the antlers are a major difference between the two species. While both have antlers, the size and branching patterns vary. The caribou’s antlers are generally larger and more complex, often with more points. Reindeer, on the other hand, typically have smaller, less intricate antlers.

Observe the body size and fur. Caribou tend to be slightly larger and bulkier than reindeer. They also have thicker, denser fur that helps them survive colder environments. Reindeer, however, have lighter coats and may appear more slender in comparison.

Behavior can also provide clues. Caribou are known to migrate over long distances, while reindeer typically remain in one area during their life cycle, although some populations of reindeer in the wild do migrate.

By paying attention to these distinct features–antler structure, body size, fur thickness, and behavior–you’ll be able to make a more accurate identification between these two similar species.
